Caring For Newly Pierced Ears

Ear piercing has always been a trend. Wearing earrings isn’t something that we see going anywhere anytime soon, because there’s just something about wearing earrings that’s fun! Earrings are a great accessory to change and add to any look in an instant. This season it’s all about the constellation piercing trend, with multiple piercings placed in different areas of the ears to create a constellation type of look. Now that ear piercing trends are booming, we felt that it was important to take some time to share tips on caring for newly pierced ears. While having pierced ears in any way are fun and exciting, they’re not so fun if you don’t care for them properly.

Keep Them As Clean As Possible
This may seem obvious, but keeping newly pierced ears as clean as possible is essential to the healing process of pierced ears. Because pierced ears are essentially an open wound, the healing process needs to be taken seriously. This means avoiding touching your ears and the new piercings as much as possible. The more you touch your newly pierced ears, the higher risk you’re at for developing an infection in the piercing. Keep in mind that your fingers and hands hold bacteria and oil–two elements that don’t do any favorites for healing wounds. Additionally, using alcohol regularly to keep the piercings clean and eliminated of bacteria will do wonders for the healing process.

Don’t Remove the Earrings Too Soon
Anytime you get your ears pierced (or any part of your body, for that matter) you’re given a ‘starter’ earring for the piercing. As tempting as it is to want to change the earrings to start enjoying different styles, colors and earrings you need to keep the starter earrings in for the suggested amount of time. Removing the starter earrings too soon can cause the piercing to become infected, filled with bacteria, and prolong the healing process to something that’s much longer than it needs to be. We’re all about you enjoying different styles, but resist the urge to change anything before the professional requested. You’ll thank yourself later!

Be Aware of Your Surroundings
While your ears are healing after getting a new piercing done, you’re going to want to be much more aware of your surroundings. You’d be surprised at how many things can get caught on earrings, until you get them pierced. Wearing things like hats, scarves and other accessories can get caught in newly pierced ears and cause tearing/irritation to occur. This is why you need to be as aware as possible when your ears are healing. If and when you can avoid wearing those types of accessories while your ears are healing, the better off you’ll be.  It’s not just accessories that can get caught, though. If you have longer hair, be aware of your hair getting caught and avoid ripping hair out of the earring.

While getting your ears pierced is a common practice, it’s not something to take casually. There are things that can happen when you don’t care for them properly.
