Summer Styling Tips

Woman wearing a hat sitting on the edge of a swimming pool.

Summertime is a time for change, and revamping your hair style. There are many different things you can do to change up your look and give yourself that perfect summer style. Perhaps you’re used to always flat ironing your hair, which may work well during the cooler, less humid months – but now, with high humidity levels, many of us don’t want to risk spending the time taking on a flat ironing session only to have frizz come knocking to attack our style. That’s why Lionesse has created this awesome little summer styling tips post, to help give you the rundown on the current style, plus tell you how you can utilize each to your advantage. Read on below for tips and ideas.

Woman applying a hair spray.

Use Hair Serum
Hair serums provide many different benefits to the hair, such as:

  • Frizz control
  • Shine
  • Heat Protection
  • Manageability
  • Protection from the environment
  • SPF properties

Using a hair serum should be part of your summer styling routine to keep your hair in check, and always keep it looking its absolute best. You can use most serums straight out of the shower before blow drying and flat ironing your hair, or before any other type of heat styling. Also, hair serums should be applied using your fingertips and never directly to the hair itself. If you’re going to be flat ironing your hair, you will definitely want to incorporate an anti-humidity or all-in-one serum into your styling routine.

Updo under a hat for summer

Rock Some Updos
Updo’s are the perfect addition to any summer style. There are many different types of updo’s that are appropriate for summer, such as:

  • Buns – various styles, such as sock buns, cotton candy buns, ballerina buns, messy buns and more
  • Ponytails – high or low
  • Braids – lots of different types to try, such as fishtail, Dutch, waterfall, etc.
  • Chignon – similar to a bun but more elegant

There are also many other styles of updo looks that look great for the summer months. Give some different styles a try to find your perfect summer look.

Wavy hair style

Beachy or Boho Waves
Beachy waves and boho waves are huge this summer, and you can get the look yourself at home in about 10 minutes total, no matter your hair type or length. There are different ways to achieve the beachy wave look, but one of the best is to use a good sea salt spray. Apply sea salt spray to damp, clean hair, and scrunch. Blow dry on a lot setting and hit the hair with a shot of hair spray to finish. Boho waves are very similar to beachy waves, yet they don’t have as much of a messy look as beach waves. Boho waves can be done with a curling iron, curling wand, flat iron, or even by pinning hot sections of hair up onto the head to cool, and then releasing them. There are many tutorials available online to learn how to create a style that works best for you.

Woman with a bed head hairstyle

Go Natural
If you’re having one of those days where you just don’t feel like doing your hair or you’re way too pressed for time, going natural is a great summer look. Besides – bed head is in (still), and therefore, why not take advantage of it every now and then? If you really want to play up a natural bed head type style, add some texturizing spray or pomade and away you go.

Lionesse-Summer-Styling-Tips-Highlights

Highlights
If you are in the mood for a change up for summer, why not opt for some classic blonde or copper hued highlights? Highlights look oh-so-summery, and can provide that extra something you need to feel beach ready in no time.
Rocking short hair

Shorter Styles
If you’re thinking about a hair change aside from perhaps a color change up or highlighting service, maybe you could opt for a new layered hairstyle or shorter style altogether. Both of these types of styles look great for summertime and provide plenty of summer flair.

I believe using serum is the key, along with a Lioneese higher end iron. I think some people forgo this step in the summer but with sun and harsh pool chemicals, it’s a must. So important to understand that if you think you’re having a bad hair day because of humidity or wind, everyone else is too! Good idea’s for summer hairstyles, put it up or go natural! Thanks for the tips!

I was “gifted” with curly hair – I was virtually Shirley Temple’s twin when I was little, with the golden ringlets that formed perfectly without using rollers. Of course, my hair has changed over the years and while I love my curls most of the time, the heat and humidity of summers here in the Chicago area makes it very hard to keep my hair looking the way I want it to. I have never tried using a hair iron but a couple of my daughters have become quite proficient with theirs and have managed to keep their curls under control even in 92 degree weather with 94 percent humidity. I am ready to give it a try.

Thanks for the tips! After having 4 kids my hair is just not as thick and full as it used to be. I cringed when my hair dresser said my hair was “fine”. Changing hair means having to change the way I care for and style it. It gets extremely frizzy when it’s humid now, it gets oily more quickly, and very limp. I’ve cut it shorter, added layers for volume and bouce, and use minimal styling products to keep it clean and fluffy.

This looks like an amazing flat iron. I always use a serum, but I have to be careful not to use too much, or it leaves my hair looking greasy. I’m taking a break from the Organic Keratin treatments I was having because they are so costly. This flat iron makes it look like you can get the same kind of results without having to have the straightening treatment. My hair has a lot of unnatural wave in it. I’d love to figure out how to get the beautiful beach waves like the model. I didn’t know the bed head look is in. That gives me a lot more confidence to go out without making my hair look perfect. The humidity usually messes with my “perfect hair” look anyway.

I have medium length curly hair (and sometimes frizzy depending on the weather and what products I have put in my hair) Flat iron will help me straighten it and it will look much better. Having curly hair every day gets boring there is just so much you can do.

My hair is quite long, and should incorporate the all-in-one serum into my hair routine. I am so glad that braids are in fashion, as that is an easy way to style hair for a hot summer day.

During the summer, I like to style my hair in two ways: bun and ponytail updos. I have tried the beachy waves but the humidity and heat deterred me from wearing my hair down.

Hair serum is a must for me. I went years without it and I wish I hadn’t! I use it before I blow dry my hair and after styling to help with flyaways.

This is a great page with some good information. My daughter has long, long hair and I love doing different styles on her. The frizz is always hard to control

I have found a really good up do for work is to use a cloth headband and tuck my hair in.. if it’s wispy that’s even better… the bonus? It actually curls my hair for when i take it down – then just need a little fluff and good to go 🙂
