Most of us know we need to cleanse our faces on a daily basis, stay away from picking at zits, and always remove our makeup at night before bed to have great skin. Did you know that there are other things you may or may not be doing which can cause breakouts and oily skin as well? Some of the things you do on a daily basis, which you may think are harmless, might actually be breaking you out – and can even cause terrible skin infections, such as staph. Lionesse would like to take a look at some of things you may be doing every day without knowing you are causing these problems for yourself.
Cell Phone Use = Bacteria
Every time you use your cell phone, and take a look at it, do you see the cosmetic buildup and oils left behind? These products and germs can infest your pores, causing bacterial buildup and forming painful pimples, blackheads, and even infections. Avoid this by wiping your phone down with a sanitizing wipe at the end of every day.
Germ Filled Pillowcases
You know that pillowcase you’ve been using that hasn’t been washed in two weeks? You will want to throw that into the washer as soon as you read this. You need to change your pillowcases and sheets every two-three days, says some experts – and if you aren’t, you are exposing your skin to absorbing excess oil which has sunk into your pillowcases and sheets, as well as bacteria and dust. This is the best way to avoid pesky breakouts. When your skin comes in contact with the material for 6-8 hours a night, there’s no telling what you might absorb into your face.
Get Your Shower Temp in Check
Taking a super-hot shower might sound like a great idea after a long, hard day at work, but did you know that hot showers are known to dehydrate the skin? Rather than opting for hot, which we know you love, learn to love the setting on lukewarm, which will protect your skin and keep it soft and hydrated. Be sure to remember to moisturize directly after your shower.
Alcohol Consumption Causes Dehydration
Having a drink once or twice a week is generally okay, but did you know that drinking excess amounts of alcohol can dehydrate your skin, making you appear dry, cracked, and itchy? You can avoid this by having one glass of wine a couple times a week, rather than a daily glass or more than one at a time. The same goes with hard liquor and beer as well. One drink won’t dehydrate your skin and body, but anything more than that certainly will.
Over Exfoliation
Exfoliation is key to renewing your skin to a fresh, radiant state – but overdoing it is never good for anyone. This can cause skin irritation, dryness, itching, and redness. Opt for exfoliating once per week on your face, and up to twice per week for body. Be sure to use a facial peel, facial polish, or mask for facial exfoliation, rather than going for something abrasive or harsh.

I learned a lot. I didn’t know you should clean your pillow case every 2 days. Also often you clean your sheets. I have been cleaning once a week. I already exfoliate. Also know you shouldn’t take hot showers. I take warm showers. Luke warm is too cold for me.
I really need to change my pillow cases!! I don’t drink so that’s ok but I do tend to over exfoliate! Thanks for the tips!
Wow!! great information on taking care of your skin!!

Thank you so much for the info. I didn’t realize how many every day items are bad for your skin
I dont know why but my skin has been getting these brown spots and they go away each time I shower but not for long i dont know how to fix that
Thanks for the healthy skin tips. I didn’t know I needed to change my pillowcases that often. I have been cleaning my phones as often as I can.

Great advice! I do most of these things right except exfoliate. I must do that as well. Thanks for the info!
Sure is great advice! I must say I am doing most of these things right. It is hard to resist picking those zits though sometimes! I have oily skin and have to clean it throughout the day.
WoW !! Great Tips ! ..Tips that i will use !
I really like this because I have been telling people for a long time about the consumption of alcohol and taking too hot of a shower.. How much they do dry and can ruin your skin… I know because I have a few dry spots in which now I have to use medicated lotion because of the too many hot showers..
Very helpful information on skin care, thank you
This would explain alot lol ,,i honestly did think about the phone tip and the pillow tip .Thank you 🙂
I am constantly having skin problems, thanks for the tips, I will definitly be thankful for this post!

Yes, I definitely want to wash my pillowcase after reading this post. Thank you for sharing this information.
I noticed my cell phone needs cleaning at least twice a day. I also break out around my glasses in the summer time. Right by my ears so I will try the sanitizing wipes on them also.
I needed this info. Up until last year, I had beautiful skin. Now it is dry with uneven skin tone.
Thanks for the great information. Didn’t even think about the cellphone but now I am cleaning it regularly.
Wow! What helpful information! Face cleansing the proper way is very important! I will be sure to follow these steps!
All good things in life are bad for you, now we know it is true. I have been sabotaging my skin. Thanks for the heads up.
I never knew that about three cell phones.. E awww m r thinking that… And skincare is really important to me
I’ve been really good and aware of all of these except I just recently started realizing I am touching my face way too much with my phone and that is usually the side that I have the most problems with breakouts! Definitely trying to hold my phone away from my ear now and keeping the volume up higher, and cleaning my phone on the regular now!
I am bad about not washing off makeup at night. I am retired and don’t wear it on a daily basis but still like to look good. I don’t drink enough water and my skin is dull and I have to use moisturizer all the time. Thanks for the tips.
I was surprised to see that pillow cases need to be changed every 2-3 days, even if we wash our faces before bed.
Good info. I didn’t know a bunch of this. Thank you for sharing! =D
Great tips. I didn’t know the tip about shower temperature regulation. I don’t think I ‘ll be able to do lukewarm showers.

Ewww cellphone bacteria. Great tips though!
Thanks for the tips! i really didn’t know about how often I should wash/change my pillow cases! I was wondering if you could do a follow up on bedding if having a pet sleeping in the same room/on the same bed or furniture has any effect on skin. Thanks for the info!
Wow! Some great info. here. I need to change my pillow case more often

Great post!! Everyone should be aware of these facts!
Thanks for sharing your beauty knowledge! I was aware of most of these, but putting them altogether like this is really helpful – I will definitely be sharing this article with my friends!
I’m going to start cleaning my cell phone more regularly because I definitely see the smudges from my moisturizer after I use it. I change my sheets once a week though. Though it would be better for my skin and a treat to have always clean sheets, I don’t think I’ll change that. We are having a bad drought and that would be selfish!
Great Article! Who knew you should wash a pillow case every two to three days? And I can definitely see that people who are stuck to a cell phone all day should keep it sanitized regularly! Great Tips!
It’s always great to get tips on taking care of my skin! I have problem skin so I will try just about anything to help.
Amazing!
I knew about most of these tips, except for the hot shower one. I think I may just have to moisturize extra well, and up my water intake to try and compensate for that one, because I don’t know if I can give up my hot showers.

Very interesting info!
I read the article and I find that the more I use cleansers and toners on my face the more I get blemishes. Some times these are big ingrown ones. What else could I wash my face with?
Hi Joanna,
Great question. It could be that the cleanser or toner (or even both) you are using isn’t right for your skin type. The first step would be to determine what your skin type is and then to find a cleanser with the best ingredients to care for it. Keep in mind that a healthy lifestyle also has a huge impact on your skin.
Hope this info helps!
Great article. I do clean my phone a couple times a day bc it looks gross never thought of the bacteria. I do bedding once a week or more if it’s hot. I have poor face cleaning habits. I don’t use much on it but plain water most of the time. Now that I am closer to 50 I really realize I need to take better care of it if I want to keep it smooth and avoid wrinkles a little while longer
Helpful article!
Thank you for the information!
The Phone…i never thought of it as a germ-hoarder, but i will now!
Never knew that about hot showers! I did know you should do your final rinse of conditioner with cooler water though!

Though I pretty much know some stuffs presented, it is still a good info source and reminded me so much about skincare in the midst of busy schedules. And water, drink as much water as possible, it really do help. Thanks!

I recently started taking colder showers (before LA became super humid! lol) and I’ve actually noticed that my skin is a lot more healthier and refreshed. I pretty much did everything else on this list prior to the colder showers, and I think that was just the icing on the cake!
